1
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background and Objective of the Paper
The study of
Educational Psychology was very helpful in the field of education. As I am
going to be the educator and a priest I thought that it will be better that I
do a paper based on the relationship of parents and the children in the field
of education. The role of the teacher and the mentality of the student were
explained very detail in the class and I understood them well. But the role of
the parents and family in the education was not very clear to me; hence I
wanted to make a research on the family and its influence on the child’s
education. The movie that I have chosen for this research is a Tamil movie
namely Tony Not Out. This movie is very much based on the relationship of
parents and students. I hope that this research will help me to have a very
clear understanding of the parent’s role in the education of the child.
1.2 Structure of the Paper
In
the first chapter I have explained the reasons and objectives of this paper. I
have clarified the definitions of the words Psychology and Educational Psychology
with its aims and concern. I have also given method, instrumentation and the
methodological limitations of this paper in the first chapter. In the second
chapter I have presented the synopsis of the movie. I have also made an attempt
to explain the role of the teacher and parents in the education of the children
in this particular movie with the help of some authors. I have explained the
mentality of the boy in this movie with its reasons. In the conclusion I have
presented my own views on this particular movie.
1.3 Instrumentation and Procedure
This paper as it is
based on a movie the procedure that I followed was to watch the whole movie
first and then reviewed the whole movie once again. The second time I made it a
point to make essential note of particulars. With the particulars I formulated
the synopsis and then critically analyzed each event and brought out the
psychological views in that particular character or event.
1.4 Definition of the Terms
1.4.1 Psychology
The word Psychology
comes from the two Greek words Psche
and Logos. Psyche means soul and Logos
means science. So basically Psychology was known as science of the soul. Latter
there was change of the meaning, some said that it is science of mind and some
others said that it is science of the consciousness. Lastly it got the meaning
as science of behaviour. Psychology is a science that basically studies the
behaviour.[1]
1.4.2 Educational Psychology and its
Objectives
Educational Psychology
is the branch of Psychology that studies the human behaviour in education.
Human behaviour and education are its two main references.[2]
Educational Psychology has got three aspects of study they are: the learner,
the learning process and the learning situation. Here the learner refers to the
student, process refers to the way in which the education takes place and
situation refers to the environment of education.[3]
The main objectives of Educational Psychology are to improve the current
educational programmes and improve the understanding of how an individual
obtains education.[4]
1.5 Methodological Limitations
The main limitation of
this paper lies in the language. The movie is in Tamil hence I could not
translate the exact words which will express the original feelings. The other
limitation is that I have used limited number of books for this paper.

TONY
NOT OUT: IN VIEW OF EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY
2.1
Synopsis of the Movie
Every
parent wants to provide a better future for their own children. They do
everything for the betterment of their children. In this movie also there is a
father who is bothered only about the betterment of his children. His wife is
dead and he has got a boy and a girl studying in the school. He tries his level
best to make his children study and get settled in their lives. He holds the
responsibility to give both the love of the mother and father. He works in the registration
office as clerk. He works extra time to get little more money. The children are
very loving and kind. The boy studies in the 9th standard and the
girl in the 8th standard. The girl is very committed to her studies
where as the boy is lightheaded, his performance in the study is very poor.
Though in studies he was poor he is part of the school cricket team. The coach
of the team by noticing his behaviour was sure that he will become a great
cricketer, due to this the coach gives personal attention to this boy. The boy
is also very much attached to cricket, he was not able to memorize a
mathematical table but he was able to memorize the details about cricket
perfectly. He is not a student who was not able to study but a student who does
not have interest to study.
One fine day the principle of the school calls for the
father of the boy and tells him that the progress of the boy is very poor and
so either the boy has to leave the school or continue in the same class one
more year and show improvement. The father stopped him form playing cricket
thinking that he will study but the situation grows worst. The boy was not
normal he was not able to do anything. One day the father tries to make him
study but the boy was not able to study, in anger the father hits the boy and
he goes to unconsciousness. The father is arrested and then released, he feels
very bad for having done that and he tries all possible means to cure the boy.
This father who is all worried takes part in a TV show and blames the
educational system, due to this he is fired form his job and the loan for the
treatment of the boy is also denied. He complains to the Chief Minister of the
state and he is helped by the CM. Even though the treatment is over the boy was
not able to come to consciousness. Having understood the boy the father shows
the matches of Tony the boy’s favorite cricketer and crates the ambient which
the boy loved. Gradually the boy comes to his consciousness and the father
allows him to play for the cricket team and he performs extremely well as not
out batsman his studies also improved. In future the boy becomes a great
cricketer.
2.2
Family as the Basis of Education
In
the lives of every child the family plays a vital role especially in the field
of education. Watson[5] gave
much importance to the environment in the process of education. He said that
the child is what it is because of the environment and not because of
instincts. He emphasized on the importance of infancy and early childhood in
the formative period of the human life.[6] In
this movie too the family situation plays a vital role. The mother of the boy
died when he was very young, the boy grew up with out the affection of the
mother and the father was not in a position to give the love of both the father
and mother. There was always emptiness in the boy’s heart. The father allowed
whatever the boy wanted to do, this made the boy to loose interest in studies
and focus only on cricket. There was no one in the family to make the boy
realize that education was also as important as games.
The
boy’s main focus was on cricket since the boys was not having a mother the
father was of the idea that he is fulfilling that love of the mother by
providing him the material things; he failed to realize that he also must give
him emotional support. The complexity of the mental process makes it difficult
to determine the functional potentialities of mental development. Mental
development means the abilities in memory, imagination, language and etc.[7] In this boy’s case the father or his sister
was not able to measure his mental development because he was able to keep the
details of cricket very perfectly in mind and not the subjects. Here the family
that was not organized and understood well fails to create an ambient of study
for the boy.
2.3
The Role of the Teacher
Acquiring
of concept is an essential factor in mental growth; certain concepts are
formulated by the children before they enter the school which remains deep in
the mind of a child.[8] The concept that the children form by
themselves are very important. It becomes their interest, preoccupation,
objectives, likes and dislikes and motives, these can be known by making them
to express themselves spontaneously.[9] As
I have mentioned children come with lots of ideas and interests, the teacher
needs to find out that and make that interest as a means to impart knowledge.
In this movie the boy was fully interested in cricket, the teacher instead of
making use of that liking to make him study he concentrated only on the talent
leaving out the other sector of education. Though it was a good thing that the
teacher found out the real talent of the boy he failed to lead him towards an
integral growth.
The
teacher can justify himself saying that he gave his best to the child, but at
the same time the fault is that he failed to concentrate on the other area of
life which is also as important as the game itself. For this the teacher needs
to have a very clear understanding of what the child is capable and what the
child is not capable of. This requires a great amount of dedication from the
part of the teacher to have personal relationship with the children who are
entrusted to their care.
2.4
The Boy and His Difficulties
The
most essential factor in learning is that the student is involved in education.
If the child does not have the basic interest it will never get involved in the
education.[10]
This was one of the basic problems of the boy. He was not able to involve himself
in education as he was involved in cricket. Since he was left free from the
childhood he did not bother about anybody, he was worried about his game alone.
Self acceptance and rejection always go together. When a person has no self
acceptance and faces rejection it affects the person very much.[11]
In the learning process the emotions also plays a determining role, when a
student is not able to satisfy his emotional need like love, affection and
attention here the hatred towards subject and teacher arises.[12]
The boy’s father when stopped him from playing cricket the boy thought that he
is rejected and went into depression, he longed for attention and affection
from his father which was denied. This is the reason why the boy went into
unconsciousness and not because the father beat him. When the care and
attention was given the boy came back to normal life and he was also able to
perform better in his studies.
The
boy had lots of psychological difficulties which were not noticed by any one be
it the father or the teacher until the boy went into unconsciousness. Only
after the boy was affected they realized their own fault and regret for it. If
the father of the teacher would have realized the problem of the boy the life
of the boy would have been made much better.

3
CONCLUSION
In
the first chapter I have explained clearly abut the reason for having chosen
this movie for this paper. As I have mentioned in the introduction the purpose
of this paper is to understand clearly the role of the parents in education of
the children. After having analyzed this movie form the view of Educational
Psychology I have discovered many things. First of all the role of the father
in this movie is given much importance. The father remains a factor who makes
the boy to loose the interest in studies as well as an inspiration for the boy
to become active in his aim and education. In the education or in any other
factor the parents can influence either positively or negatively.
The second important
thing that I want to mention here is about the boy, when a child lacks the love
and affection that it needs in the tender age it has a very bad influence on
the behaviour of the child. This lack of love and affection remains deep in the
child’s heart throughout the life of the child and torments the child at all moments.
This is what exactly happens to the boy in the movie, the boy did not get the
love of the mother and the father was not in a position to give the love of
both; father and mother. At times even the father fails to give the love,
affection and attention that are needed for the growth of the child. It is this
which makes the boy to worry too much and go in to unconsciousness.
I could conclude this paper saying that the
love of the parents in the early childhood of the children is the most
essential factor in the education of the children, when this is denied it leads
to all sorts of psychological problems and ruin the life of the child.
